Poet Biography

Although remembered evocative for his elegantly argued critical essays, Matthew Poet (1822-1888) began his career as a poet, attractive early recognition as a student at the Rugger School where his father, Thomas Arnold, had justifiable national acclaim as a strict and innovative ward. Arnold also studied at Balliol College, Oxford Institution of higher education. In 1844, after completing his undergraduate degree mad Oxford, he returned to Rugby as a schoolteacher of classics.
